Self Portrait #1
According to a study done in 2008, 28% of the average persons autotopography is collected during childhood and adolescence. These objects serve as place holders for people, places, or events of our past that are significant to who we are today. So, what about people who have experienced frequent or traumatic displacement during childhood? Those who have lost their autotopography can be left feeling like they are missing pieces of their past.
As someone who experienced frequent displacement during childhood I was not afforded the opportunity to keep many of the objects composing my autotopography. This piece is a reflection of that missing feeling. It is a map of Neosho, Missouri; the town I lived in for the majority of my childhood.
I created this piece as an introduction to my newest series where I will be exploring the idea of recreating my own autotopogrpahy from my childhood and adolescence.
